Going to the Chapel: Part 1
Many of our Nantucket brides have told us they are torn between a beach ceremony and a church ceremony. If you are planning on the latter of the two we want to help. This post will come in a series of posts with tips on how it plan your Nantucket wedding at each of the islands churches. Nantucket has several options for beautiful church ceremonies and they all have different requirements, guest capacity and ceremony times. Be sure to find out about the rules for photography and videography during your wedding. Some island churches do not allow these services during the ceremony.
St. Mary’s, Our Lady of the Isle is located downtown Nantucket on beautiful Orange Street. This Catholic Church offers two wedding services on Saturdays, Noon and 2:00, and can accommodate up to 350 people. There are eligibility requirements in order to marry at St. Mary’s: there must be a connection to the island or the parish by virtue of such things as property ownership or member registration at the Church. Weddings must be religious in nature and must be in accordance with the rites and rituals of the Catholic and other Christian denominations. Fees are available upon request and weekday weddings can be accommodated as well.
The Siasconset Union Chapel, commonly know as the Chapel, is located on New Street in Sconset and is steeped in Nantucket charm. The Siasconset Union Chapel is a Christian Non-denominational Chapel. Therefore, religious ceremonies of the Protestant and Catholic Faiths are permitted. These ceremonies are expected to adhere to the Rites, Rituals and Regulations of these Faiths. Weddings are normally scheduled on Saturdays. The Chapel is available seasonally from June 1 through Columbus Day weekend. Rehearsals are scheduled on Fridays. This intimate Chapel seats up to 180 people. Resident Minister, The Reverend Bruce Rigdon, is available for your ceremony and consultation. Visiting Clergy are welcome to officiate after receiving delegation from Rev. Rigdon for Protestant services. Catholic Clergy need delegation from Father Paul Canuel, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church. The fee to reserve the Chapel is $2500.
For questions and information on reserving either of these churches for your Nantucket wedding please contact Elaine Boehm, Chapel Administrator and St. Mary’s liaison for all catholic weddings. 508-257-9868 or ackaunt@comcast.net
